Polish tennis players are leading 2-0 against Uzbekistan in the World Group I Davis Cup play-off. Hubert Hurkacz defeated Sergey Fomin 6-2, 6-1, and then Maks Kasnikowski defeated Chumajun Sultanov 6-3, 6-1. The doubles match is up next, with the team of Hubert Hurkacz and Jan Zieliński, who were friends since their junior days and Zieliński is a mixed doubles champion at the Australian Open.
“We have a very strong team. I’m glad that Hubert will play in this match because he is currently one of the best tennis players in the world,” said Poland’s team captain Mariusz Fyrstenberg. Hurkacz is ranked 30th in the ATP ranking, his highest ever in his career, and it is the result of his good performance at the Australian Open where he reached the quarterfinals.
“I think my level at the beginning of this season was quite good, of course. I was really hoping to win the United Cup, and it was close, but it ended in the final. I also thought I would go a little further in the Australian Open.
But it’s definitely an improvement in my performance at Grand Slam tournaments, and now the game is getting better. I hope to build on this and improve even more,” evaluates Hurkacz.
